Viva's Goes to School ALONE today....

I have spent the last month working with Viva in Madison's classroom. That meant driving to and from her school which is about 30 minutes away. Today was her first day riding in the van alone with Madison. I took this picture to show how excited Madison was to have her "buddy" with her.

The day however was much harder than the staff anticipated. It looks as if the bus driver undid her leash and the staff didn't put it back on right. Thus, they were dragged through the school to get to the classroom and the commands given were not obeyed. However, when I arrived at lunch time Viva was on her best behavior. When we returned to the classroom I noticed that the large jar of treats I sent into the classroom were almost gone (uh, poor belly on Viva).

Here's hoping Wednesday goes a bit smoother....positive note last Friday Viva detected another fever on Maddie. Super, super excited to not only realize what was happening but the classroom staff saw how Viva acted....

Happy Halloween -- Houdini Howlers Style

Day 7 of training started off with two tracks in the midst. Grandpa took Maddie by stroller through a baseball field and hid behind a shed and on the second trip he took her stroller through a dense wood trail and hid behind some brush. Via found her both times.....she is getting better and better at tracking Maddie. Then we went back to 4 Paws and worked on tethering Maddie to Viva....this is where Madison is hooked to Viva and she has to staying in a down position while Madison pulls on her or while we are walking Madison is walking next to her or behind her. Although both girls are about the same weight Viva is a strong dog and is able to keep Madison from running...yeah! Then if was off to the mall again to walk through the stores, ride in elevators, and meet huge stuffed tigers. Viva also tracked a trainer twice through the shoe department and did fabulous. We ended the day with a gathering of 5/10 service dogs at our house for a potluck and trick or treating through the neighborhood. Maddie was "Batgirl" and Viva was "Wonder dog." We didn't stay out to long for Madison is now on her second round of antibiotics for a sinus infection. Zachary on the other hand took advantage of the wonderful weather and stayed out for the two hours and collected a ton of candy. He was a "Pokemon" trainer.....Happy Halloween and to all a good night! Sorry, I am getting ahead of myself! The last picture I just took is of Madison and Viva laying in bed sleeping for the 3rd night in a row....Viva is doing great...I heard Madison the other night at 2am..."Viva, oh Viva girl." So much better than "Mommy, mommy I sleep here!"

Training days 2 - 6...time flies

Day 2 is over time to take Viva home and introduce her to the Harley and our neighbors....

Training Day 3 -- Another intense day of training Viva or should I say Viva's parents. We started out our AM session with a bit of tracking work. Maddie ran off with another trainer and Viva searched her out in about 5 minutes. Maddie was hiding behind a shed and Viva was so excited to "find" her. I started to tear up realizing that my greatest "fear" of losing Maddie has been lessened by the mere presence of Viva. Then we worked on basic obedience and then ended class with Viva teaching us how to “lap” (putting her paw or muzzle on Maddie) and “over” which is laying on Maddie for deep pressure input. Our evening ended with a fast pace 1 mile heel walk and then books in bed with Madison; where Viva stayed for 10minutes before jumping down. Our goal is for her to sleep all night in her bed. A wonderful day had by all. Now to attend to Maddie girl who has a cold. Thank you to all those who have left wonder posts of support.

Day 4 - tracking and outing to the mall. Viva did fantastic in finding M in the woods and was a trooper while we walked around the mall for 3+ hrs and no loot in hand! She even tolerated an extremely rude/uneducated woman (Mommy not so much)....and to top it off she laid on M while I gave meds and cleaned her nose..no screaming and she just spent an hour in her bed. Yippee a great day

Day 5 - Saturday morning started with Viva tracking Madison and Mommy. The first track was rough because Viva is still trying to memorize her Madison’s scent but she found us. Then onto basic obedience and lots of loving from Maddie. It is amazing to watch the bond form! We took Viva to Subway for lunch where she wasn’t even noticed while we ate our subs…and Madison was easily directed to sit back down “next to Viva” normally we would have to chase her around the restaurant a few times. Then back to the center where we learned about the feed/grooming of our service dog. Back home tonight and we tried our own tracking trek in the neighborhood tonight…and Viva did well until she meet a neighbor’s dog but she did find Maddie on a swing set and was super excited. Then at bedtime with protest from Maddie to brush her teeth I decided Viva needed her teeth brushed so we did that first and Maddie was then happy to comply! As I write this post Viva just came down the stairs after two hours of laying in bed with our little girl who is coughing up a lung!

First Training Day

What a wonderful first day of training. We started the day off super excited to meet Viva girl. We arrived at 4 Paws with the other 9 families and had to wait forever to finally get her out of her cage. Madison kept saying "Let Viva out" over and over. She is a beautiful golden yellow color and is so lovable. Aftrer our family meeting with her it was down to the business of training. Although she already knows 40 commands we worked with her on sit, down and stay. It was an intense emotional day one. Side note the lead trainer saw her doing detection work "seizure alerting" on Madison at 11:48am and tonight she developed a runny nose and fever.....amazing already! (Pictures are in reverse order)

Columbus Marathon

I can mark another "life" goal completed. This past Sunday I ran in the Columbus Marathon for 26.2 miles...It was a difficult task but I finished. Mike and the kids greeted me at the 18 mile marker and then Zach ran me in at the finish line. The weather was great and the race course was great...lots of spectators and running through the campus was fun! Post-race: I am feeling good....toes hurt but I am thinking of signing up for a 1/2 marathon in the near future.
Kuddos goes out to Karen and Hollee for completing the race too! And to cousin, Lisa for running her first ever race and 1/2 marathon at that! Girl Power.....

We found out on Saturday that Madison's new service dog is a Golden Retriever. Her name is VIVA....she was born on 28 July 2010....I've attached her "puppy" picture and her most recent picture...she is just beautiful. Madison is soooo excited to meet her as are the rest of us! When I showed her the photos on my phone she started kisses my phone....training starts next Tuesday!

Where did the summer go? Ashley started her junior year, Zachary is now in school full-time for 1st grade and Madison is in pre-k. What will I do to fill my days? We have six weeks left till we meet Madison's service dog....yeah!

Ashley turns 16

Our little squirt turned 16. Ashley woke up to 16 helium in the dining room. We took her out to her favorite restaurant, Olive Garden and had cake, ice cream and opened up presents....

Ashley is a wonderful young lady and we can't wait to see what life has in store for you. Happy birthday, Ash!

To think seven years ago our baby boy came into this world, screaming his little head off....we thank God every day for you, Zachary. This year we decided to have a "movie star" themed party and it turned out that Kung Fu Panda 2 was making its debut. Zachary invited a few friends from his class over for pizza, cake (in the shape of a popcorn box), ice cream and an outing to the movie theatre. We had so much fun listening to them "chat" about the movie on the way home....the laughter and youth made us both reminisce about how fast he is growing up!

My mother's day this year was truly "a mother's day." Maddie was sick so I got to sit and rock her all day....and be a mom! Ashley made me the most yummy mother's day dinner too...she spent hours in the kitchen cooking for me....it was wonderful! Mike and the kids went overboard with wonderful gifts....loved my chimena and the smores we cooked were yummy!

We had a wonderful Easter this year. We were able to celebrate a day early with Uncle Tony and Uncle Jamie (Natalee's brothers). Natalee and Jamie cooked a yummy dinner, followed by playing Euchre late into the evening and then assisting the Easter bunny...we all know how busy he can get. Early the next morning not only did Natalee have a horrible case of food poisoning but Zachary found the golden egg. The kids enjoyed several egg hunts and Ashley even filled her basket.

A new driver on our roads

We can hardly believe the time has come for our Ashley to get her driver's license. Mike took her to get her temps (oh, the embarrassment) and took plenty of pictures for me to view. She didn't want her younger siblings to attend in this momentous occasion. Thankfully, she has to wait a bit of time and take drivers classes before the "real" license is issued.

Madison Turns FIVE!

I can't believe how fast time truly does go -- Madison turned 5 today! Here is a picture of her when she came home from the hospital and this morning before she left for school.

She started her day off by taking in cupcakes (shaped like buried dog bones) to her classmates. Then they sang the birthday "around" the world song and enjoyed a snack.

She came home to a house deocrated with 5's everywhere....Zachary even made her a 5 chandiler. Celebrating the fact that she will be getting a service dog, I made her the "doggie" cake.....We ate a yummy spagahgetti bake dinner followed by homemade ice cream and cake....thank you to everyone who sent a gift. It made her day that much more special. This is the first year that she said "more" after opening up each gift!

We did it! We did it! As of today we have made our fundraising goal of $13K. Madison's class date is Oct 24....where we will have two intense weeks of training with her service dog. We will still have our last two fundraisers and that money will go toward another child's fundraising goal. Weekend at Camp Courageous

What a weekend we had.....the kids went fishing, bowling, swimming, played in the gym, horseback riding, made arts and crafts, got their nails painted, watched a movie (while mom/dad had a date night) and had ice cream whenever we wanted it!

Camp Courageous is a camp for families with disabilities. They provide a weekend of activities and respite care for the families. It was an absolutely gorgeous background in Scottsville, KY and we were so lucky to be given this opportunity. Thank you to the camp staff for your compassion and loving our "special" kids.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAMILY SEEKS HELP FOR DAUGHTER

Madison Landers is a preschooler who lives in Montgomery County, Ohio, and attends St. Rita’s School for the Deaf in Cincinnati, Ohio. She lives with her mom, dad, and two older siblings.

Madison had a difficult birth but developed normally during the first 10 months of her life. However, around 11 months of age, we realized she wasn’t hearing correctly. Tubes were placed in her ears, but unfortunately, her attempts at speech failed to return. At 14 months of age, we asked for an Early Intervention Team to assess her because we believed “something was not right” with her. That assessment stated she was within normal developmental ranges. Around this same time, Madison was trying to learn how to walk but her right foot did not work properly and moved perpendicular to her left foot. Again, we took her to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who told us not to worry because she was within normal development. At 18 months of age, we asked for another Early Intervention evaluation and the team assessed Madison and determined she was NOW developmentally delayed in all areas. What a blow we took that day! Then two weeks later, Madison had her first febrile, or fever, seizure. It was one of the worst days of our lives. We did not know how to help her so we stood aside and hoped the doctors knew what they were doing. We were told she would never have another seizure so we were unfortunately unprepared for what would occur just two weeks later when she had another seizure. Now over the last 2 ½ years, she has had six seizures. Each of her seizures has been different. Some are short, and some have been extremely long and have lasted over 45 minutes. Unfortunately, we will never know the extent of the damage done to Madison’s neurological system.

Madison is currently on medication to help control the seizures. MRIs have enabled doctors and us to see the myelin on her brain is not fully formed. Myelin allows our brain to function normally. Doctors are unsure if the lack of myelin has caused her apraxia, sensory issues, low muscle tone, and developmental delays. Right now her therapists and teachers believe she is functioning around the level of a 2½ -year-old.

Madison is a sweet and loving four-year-old. She has a wonderful smile and sense of humor. Madison loves to ride horses at the Therapeutic Riding Institute, swing at the local parks, swim (assisted), and watch Barney and Friends. Madison’s issues are not evident until you see her trying to run, walk up the stairs, or speak. She also has trouble with everyday tasks, such as washing her hands or getting dressed. If you see our family out in public, you may see her frustration take the form of an uncontrollable meltdown that resembles a temper tantrum. This is an unusual occurrence for someone her age, but it is because she is unable to process the world as well as you and I can.

During Madison’s short four years of life, she has undergone five MRIs, CAT scans, copious amounts of blood work, sleep-deprived EEGs, an overnight EEG, and three ear tube surgeries. When we pull up to the Children’s Hospital, she screams, “NO, MOMMY!” or “doctor hurt,” which breaks our hearts. We know that a service dog would provide her comfort and assistance during her many medical trips and appointments to her geneticist, developmental pediatrician, neurologists, speech pathologist, occupational and physical therapists, ear nose and throat specialist, sleep doctor, and psychologist.

In addition, Madison has no appropriate fear of danger, such as traffic or strangers. A multipurpose assistance dog would accompany Madison everywhere and act as a safety guard. Attached to the dog by a special harness, Madison would be unable to run into traffic or get lost. If by chance she would ever get lost, the multipurpose assistance dog will be trained in search and rescue techniques and will come to her aid during times of need.
We truly believe that Madison has a special connection with animals and have faith that a service dog will enable Madison’s progression and help her live a fuller life. The service dog will provide her independence with walking up and down stairs. The dog will be trained to detect her seizures and help her to calm down or even prevent meltdowns. Lastly, we believe this dog will bring her comfort with who she is, allow her to sleep through the night, and help her to make friends.

4 Paws for Ability, Inc., is a nonprofit organization. This organization strives to provide service dogs to families and children that struggle with life’s daily challenges. They train a variety of assistance dogs including — but not limited to — seizure assistance, mobility assistance, hearing, and autism assistance dogs. 4 Paws for Ability, based out of Xenia, Ohio, has accepted Madison into their program, and they will be training a multipurpose assistance dog specifically for her needs. They have a fund-raising requirement where they form a working relationship with the family and have the family raise money for 4 Paws for Ability on behalf of Madison. The waiting list is only as long as it takes for the family to complete their fund-raising. Training service dogs is very expensive. It costs 4 Paws an average of $22,000 per dog to be placed with a family. At 4 Paws, they partner with the child's family, who becomes a volunteer fund-raiser and makes a commitment to raise a minimum of $13,000 for the agency to qualify for a dog. Dogs are trained to specifically address the needs of each child, and this is truly a great program for Madison to benefit from in her life.

Halloween Festivities

What a long week Halloween was.....Started with Fall festivities at Madison's local horse stables. We showed up with our "boo" cupcakes and enjoyed riding on all the horses and taking a hay ride provided by Mr. Bill. Thanks Sandy!

On Wednesday night we attended the local Y's Harvest fest....Zachary and Maddie played all kinds of games and rode tiny ponies.....let the candy fest begin!

Then I prepared for Zachary's first kindergarten Halloween party. They played "toss the gourds," tried to guess what was in the witches' brew and made a skeleton and bat. Fun was had by all.

We shared beggars night with Nana and Papa. They came down from Toledo and went trick or treating with the kids. Maddie was a ghost and did an impressive "boo" and Zachary was ????. Ashley stayed home to hand out the candy. We didn't get a chance to crave pumpkins this year so we took the easy way out....turned out cute though!

So the start of the 2010-2011 school year has begun. I can't believe I will have three hours to myself in the morning. What will I do????? All the kids were excited to start school and thankfully, Daddy was here to watch everyone get up, get ready and go, go go!

Zachary and his first hit of the season

Zachary is once again very busy for the month of May. He currently is swimming twice a week, soccer twice a week and tee-ball twice a week with a golf lesson every Saturday. This was his first hit of the season!

This was Zach's last soccer game (held yesterday).....he wasn't playing goalie, but look at that save! He was apart of the "Red Chicken's" team. The coach said, "he can't wait to see him in a couple of years, he will be GOOD, REAL GOOD....the kid's got speed and agility." That's our boy!

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mothers to all of you mom's, aunts, and grandmothers....

My day started as usually making breakfast for everyone and then running to a ball game (Zach's first one of the season...pictures later)....and then cleaning up a gory, nasty mess from Maddie all afternoon (did I mention that it included a good 4 different diaper changes).....so much for sleeping in, getting served breakfast in bed, taking a nap and overall relaxing...maybe next year when Mike returns home!

So an email arrived last week that lists the difference between special needs moms and regular moms. I totally could see myself in that list. So for all you mom's out there...enjoy this list and count your blessings!

Take a look the hood and see for yourself.

Regular moms tell their kids to wake up and get dressed in the morning. And they do it. Special needs moms put on battle gear to get our kids ready to start their day.

regular moms ask their kids if they brushed their teeth. Special needs moms prompt, "brush your top teeth. Brush your bottom teeth. Did you get the sides? Open your mouth. My God, give me that toothbrush! You've left half your meal in there."

Regular moms wave goodbye as their kids run off to catch the school bus. Special needs moms get awesome door-to-door bus service for their child.

Regular moms know the names of all their friends. Special needs moms know most of their friends by their username.

Regular moms hope their child finds a good career. Special needs moms are hopeful someone gives our child the chance to work.

Regular moms enjoy reading the latest best selling book. Special needs moms should receive an honorary degree for all the disability books they've read.

Regular moms go out for dinner and a movie with their husbands every month. Speical needs moms have a date night with their husbands every....wait, what decade is this?

Regular moms complain their kdis won't eat their vegatables. Special needs moms are so desperate we consider chicken nuggets to be a legitimate meat product and throw in ketchup as a vegetable.

Regular moms' kids go to play groups. Special needs moms' kids go to therapy groups.

Regular moms meet for a ladies night out. Special needs moms get together at a support groups and forums.

Regular moms have medical claim forms that fit into one file folder. Special needs moms will tell you a small forest was cut down so we could receive our claims.

Regular moms think OT means overtime. Special needs moms know more acronyms than a NASA engineer.

Regular moms have time to cook a full dinner every evening. Speical needs moms will never admit how many times we've picked up fast food.

I am just going to type one big blog for the month of March because it literally flew by.

1. First we started off with a wonderful two week visit from Grandpa and Mimi (grandparents from Alabama)...Eddie wasted no time in tackling my to-do list and Mimi was a tremendous help around the house....she cleaned and did laundry like nobodies business. They also took Zach to ice skating lessons, golf lessons, Maddie to therapies and celebrated in her school birthday party (video on that later...sooo cute)...and took Ash to school when she "missed" the bus or picked her up from school track. I hated to watch them go!

2. Due to the in-laws visit I got to fly to Maine to see my best friend from college, "Bubblebut." Christy and I spent an entire weekend shopping, eating and hiking (not to mention we almost died). I even got to meet and greet and approve of the new boyfriend:) I had not been back to Maine since college oh, so long ago...I forgot just how beautiful it is! It went by way to fast so I am hoping for a speedy engagement/wedding soon!!!!! he he he

3. Returned from my relaxing weekend and went right into party mood. Madison turned four and is now one year seizure free. So I decided we do 4 right and we had a big "horsey" theme party. My great neighbor Theresa took over the cake duties and produced a fantastic horse and even showed me how to make horse cupcakes....so so cute. The kids had a horse pinata, decorated wooden horse shoes, ran a sugar cube race, played pin the tail on the horse then went in search of the missing horses. I believe it was a good party had by all. Madison is still slowing opening her gifts.

4. However, I believe the biggest gift was the one of her Daddy showing up on her birthday! Yes, yes, yes, he suprised us all and made his journey of 20+ hours, got a ride from a stranger, and ended up in the house undetacted prior to our arrival home with last minute party things. It was a wonderful suprise.

5. We then spent several days resting from the party and suprise. We headed down to Alabama for Easter. We started our morning with a service with Grandmommy and then home to a wonderful Easter dinner....the kids were able to find all the eggs the "Big Bunny" hid however, he forgot how warm AL gets in the early afternoon so most of the chocolate eggs had melted.....then we got back in the car headed toward Birmingham were we spent the night with Uncle Phillip and Aunt Kristin. Kristin and I headed out for a girls dinner (never ever happened in our eight years of marriage)....we had a wonderful gab session, wished lived closer together.

6. The next day Mike and his brother got up early (before dark, ugh...we are on vacation) to go play a round of golf.

They returned home to a packed car. We loaded up and headed to Pensacola, FL for a much needed vacation. We checked into Portofino resort (highly recommend) and spent the 5 days playing in the pools, building sandcastles and eating out....Pensacola was a beautiful vacation we did not want it to end. However, all good things must come to an end....

Mike took the kids to see the Navy Blue Angels....they said it was a great show!

7. We packed up the car again and drove to the University of Alabama. Apparently, Ashley is thinking this is where she wants to go to college so we took a trip there to walk around the campus and of course eat. It is a beautiful campus, people are friendly, however it isn't THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY (I am a bit bias I know) we got back in the car and drove up to Huntsville, AL stay one night with Grandpa and Mimi and left the next afternoon for Ohio. It was a long drive but the kids hung in there.

Not sure who that coach is???? Anybody????

8. Mike left this past Monday to finish is deployment (Zachary and I took him to the airport in the afternoon - poor guy's flight was delayed so that added an additional hour). Back to life, back to reality, back to being a single, stressed out parent.....is that how the song goes????

9. So here we are...it is now 17 April and I am finally back on the blog...trying to get my desk cleaned off, house cleaned and the lawn mowed and to top it off my on-line school homepage has changed and I can't figure it out!!!!!!!! Here's hoping April will slow down!

At least it wasn't broken is all I kept saying to myself. Maddie fell down the stairs last night and apparently landed on her face....little did I know that she used her left hand to brace her fall...(but yeah for gross motor reaction)...OK, back to the story...so I ran up the stairs grabbed her up and held her...looked her over...moved all of her limbs and found a huge goose egg on her forehead...so we did the ol' Uncle Tony move....and iced with peas for a count of 10 on and a count of 10 off....then at about 2am this morning Maddie is moaning....and I say hush, go back to sleep u r ok...(don't I feel like the bad mommy)....so I get her up at 6am...for school, dress her and hear a scream with her shirt going over her head and arms....and mommy antennae is alerted...so I carry her down the stairs but her on the couch, turn on the TV (not the usual am routine) and run around to get ready...she is crying and moaning...and I think how unusual is this....so I run up the stairs grab my phone/shoes and start around the hallway corner to see Maddie trying to climb the stairs using her left hand and fall....(Mommy Antennae on full alert now...call the bus driver to not come to our house and we are off to spend 7, yes I said 7 wonderful hours at two separate hospitals...LONG LONG story...but we ended up at Miami Valley (great facility) where she is diagnosed with a "buckle fracture" and picks out her pink cast...needless to say I am exhausted and going to bed!
Good news though -- her pediatrician scored her ages and stages questionnaire for 42 and 48 months and she is no longer in the "developmentally delayed" category...border line normal but needs extra help....so I am joyous but cautious because I know how little of time it takes to slip...we have a long list of goals and things to work on but she is making progress...Thank You, Lord!

Ok, it was time to venture out for haircuts. I always love to go because I end up sweating by the time we leave....but this time wasn't too bad...Maddie started off sitting in her car and watching Barney...by the time it was over I had a pink sucker stuck to my chin but her hair was cut! Then it was Zach's turn to climb onto the motorcycle and watch Pokemon while getting his locks cut...tell me what you think??

Snow, Snow, Snow

Ok, so in a matter of 2 days I have shoveled the snow 4 times. I do love to play in the snow but shoveling and playing can be a bit tough, as you can see from me pulling Maddie and shoveling the driveway at the same time. We have had a few sprinkles of snow here and there but last two days we have gotten slammed with the white wintery stuff.

Funny story to share regarding Madison. I put everyone in their winter gear to include me with 3 pairs of pants and two coats plus a sweat shirt (why don't we live in Florida???). We set our sights for the outdoors. So I proceded to set Maddie down in pile of the white stuff and turned around to pick up the shovel...turned back around and she was face first in the snow. Apparently, she purposefully fell over and started to lick it....not realizing how cold it would be...it was hilarious and unfortuantely, I did not have my camera. She kept telling me over and over how cold it was....and I could agree with her more.

Christmas festivities

Today Zachary and I were able to drive to St Rita and watch Maddie's class perform "Jolly Old Saint Nicolas." The kids were great and so colorful. Maddie was able to get the last word in each sentence but the most amazing thing of all is that she sat the entire time and didn't get up....Unfortunatley, I couldn't get any video because I had a awrny 5 year old who refused to stand while I took video but I did get a few pictures of her on stag. Look out Broadway!

Then we ended the evening with opening up presents from Grandmommy and Aunt Christy. The kids throughly enjoyed their new gifts. Thank you Grandmommy and Christy!

First Few Weeks of December

We started December off with a bang with regards to getting ready for the holidays. Zachary was going through friend withdrawal so we invited the little guy's friend over. They helped Maddie and I make a gingerbread house (granted I bought it last year and intended to do it then but as you all know time gets away pretty quickly). Madison I believe had more fun spreading the frosting all over the table, what a mess!

Then the very next day we had our first snow. Didn't last long and I regretted saying the day before "If it is going to be this cold it might as well snow!" Yes, mother nature taught me a lesson.

Zachary made this beautiful advent wreath in his sunday school class.

Woke up in the wee hours of December 10 to high winds and was thankful that we had the trees trimmed prior to Mike's departure. I quickly made room in the garage for his (unsold) car only to find our lamppost out front broken...ugh, another thing to put on the to do list.

Another picture of our dog, Harley...just realized she is graying under the chin. Plus, I couldn't resist taking a picture of the bed aka nest of blankets and toys Zach covered her in.

Ashley finally got me motivated enough to finish the Christmas decorating. We put the finishing touches on the tree, made lots and lots of buckeyes (peanut butter balls covered in chocolate and yes, they are also considered poisiouns nuts) Madison and Zach actually worked together to put the toothpicks in each ball, nice job kiddos! Then we delivered cans to neighbors and the children's teachers....Ashley also talked me into going to Walmart to buy lights to decorate the trees outside (what am I crazy not only is it cold out there but it is really cold)...to digress it was a good thing we went this particular day in question because the big guy was there and the kids were able to get their picture taken with him (able to check antoher thing off of the to do list!) so we bought three LONG strands of lights to find out massive tree in the front required all three...so we just deocrated one and not all three trees. To top it off we pounded into the almost frozen ground the Santa blow up stacks for all to see our merriment. I stood my ground though on getting on the roof to hang lights....told the kids next year in the summer we will put up the hooks and make it easier to hang the lights (now I just have to remember to buy those hooks before the holiday season is up). So that is our first three weeks of December....now I just have to finish wrapping and attend Madison's performance at school. Merry Christmas to you all!

A LONG LONG Week

I am going to start with the good news. Mike got a promotion at work! It was wonderful that his whole family and my parents were able to come to Dayton and watch the event. He made an excellent speech.....he was nice to finally meet his co-workers!

Unfortunately, we lost our beloved Bailey boy tonight. We are not sure how it happened but we think the tree trimmers left the back gate open (they left in the dark) and we didn't know it until about 10pm....Ash, Uncle Phillip and I went searching for about an hour. We were going to try and find our way to a different neighborhood so I went down a very busy road (not expecting to find him) and there he was on the side. It looks as if someone hit him and dragged him to the side of the road. It was absolutely horrible and I was a mess BUT we have said out goodbyes to our Bailey boy...he no longer has to suffer from cancer and can run free all he wants in doggie heaven.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Lots of yummy food (too much)....my brother James came with his girlfriend and the great chef that he is he made the most delicious mashed potatoes ever. We had lots to give thanks for....Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. (imagine Thanksgiving pictures here!!!)

Mike has made it to his destination...and already received the box we sent. Weather is nice...he has no hot water but he has a nice room.....likes the job and is able to communicate with us when I get this skype thing up and running...thought I had it and the wee little one started touching buttons...ugh.....

Well we have finally told everyone in the family about Mike’s upcoming deployment. So far everyone is taking it well. He will be leaving sometime at the end of November...just when it starts to get cold here....and he will be arriving in HOT HOT weather....please keep us in your prayers as I try and figure out life as a single parent for some time to come....We will miss you, honey!

Carving Pumpkins

Well for some reason we had such a hard time carving out time to carve out our pumpkins this year....so we spent one beautiful fall afternoon of cutting out the tops and scooping out the pumpkin guts...which Madison thoroughly enjoyed....then a little more than a week later when Nana and PawPaw came down to help celebrate Halloween we finished the carving....Thanks Nana and PawPaw for getting us motivated.

Last Soccer Game
Zachary’s last soccer game was a bust..somehow I messed up the time....we arrived just as the team was coming off the field....I had one said Yellow Parrot on my hands....but the day was saved by eating pizza with the team and getting trophies. The famous quote by the coach was "Zachary the fireball" he was up for running up and down the field and never lost the energy...umm...I wonder why???

Halloween Night
Our trick or treaters were ready for a spooky evening of delight. Zach was besides himself and continued to tell me that his dinner could be the candy he received. Needless to say we were out at 6pm.....Zachary was GI Joe and Maddie a beautiful fairy princess. The weather was a tid bit warmer this year than last so that was nice....we were able to get a few more houses in....Didn’t get a picture of Ashley because she went to a friends to dress like a nerd!

To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate

A question we have pondered over and over....we finally relented and got everyone vaccinated except for Maddie. After visiting with her neurologist in September we were all for getting the flu shot for her but then we saw an episode on Fox news with a prominent doctor who advised against it for folks with mitochondrial issues and that is where it goes gray. Some doctors think there is more wrong with Maddie then what science can so far determine, “the technology just isn’t there yet,” is a phrase we have heard often. So after much research and endless phone calls to doctors, health departments and schools....I found that the base had a theramsol free flu shot available. So we decided to go ahead and give her that shot. Now fast forward a week and she has round two of the flu...so the question remains did the flu shot prevent this episode from being worse? A question I ponder in at night while laying in bed holding and praying that she doesn’t have another seizure....we are getting so close to that 8 month mark that we haven’t been able to get over in 16 months...ugh! I HATE this....

Trip to Alabama for the Boys

Mike and Zach went to AL for a long weekend. They had a great time see MomMaw (Zach's great grandma), visiting with Grandmommy, seeing the cousins, playing golf and eating lots of good food. Bonus, was Mike's tenacity paid off with two free tickets to go and watch the AL game versus TN (I think that is who they played)....Mike and his brother, Phillip had a great time....it was an awesome game and AL almost lost it! (from a Buckeye perspective!)

Solar System

Well we finished Zach's first big homeschooling project, the solar system. He has done a wonderful job reading books about the planets, typing the planets names and making his own solar system...next it is off to study maps (when I can get my act together!)

Pumpkin picking!

Today we went to the farm to pick pumpkins from the field. This was Mike’s first experience actually pulling the pumpkins from the field. We rode a tractor out to the fields (Maddie was excited about that)....then we went on a search to find the perfect pumpkin (no the rule from when I was young did not apply....the kids could pick what ever pumpkin they wanted.....we had a wagon to pull them back to the tractor).....Ashley and Zachary got big pumpkins...and Maddie picked the pumpkin that had dirt and worms on it....I believe she had more fun picking off the dirt and playing with the worm. Then it was off to stand in line to get some yummy ice cream (mind you it was 6ish and time for dinner).....then we got in the car and came home to make dinner. A fun day was had by all!

I have been cleaning and sorting kids clothes since we are no longer in summer (where did it go??) and I found PJs that I thought wouldn’t fit Maddie until next year but I was wrong (she now outweighs her brother by 2 pounds...he has by 1" in height....ugh, the little guy has got to grow)...How I digress.....I put on her new purple Dora slippers and she started doing this dance in them...but I was to slow on the uptake to get the orginal dance....but I did manage to get her to move her feet to show Nana!

Maddie & her MRI

Madison had her 4th MRI today. She was a real trooper too! The MRI started at about 10AM then when it was over we headed to the Cincinnati Aquarium where there was no wait to get in (I believe that is the secret, go on a weekday).....we did a quick walk through...maybe we jogged at the end because we had to run over to Kentucky to see her neurologist. The report is promising...her Mylin is still producing which is good (one’s mylin normally finishes growing by the age of two).....we wonder if the fish oil and whole milk with DHA is making the difference. He did state though that he did not believe that she has CP in her right foot (we were happy to hear that)...but we will continue to monitor her progress. He was happy to hear her say her name and other things....we will continue to work with her and enjoy her for who she is.....Now we just have to ward off the flu this season so she doesn’t have any seizures.....Oh, Maddie just turned 3.5.....can’t believe how time flies!

Farm Field Trip

Today we went to Sunrock Farms near Cincinnati with Maddie's class from school. Zachary and Maddie were able to pet cows, sheep, horses, and hold chickens. Right before lunch each of the kids were able to milk a goat....that was a sight to see. Maddie just wanted to play in the warm milk. Lastly, they sat inside a wigwam (which was a structure that the Indians here in Ohio used to sleep and eat in) Enjoy the videos...

OSU a "BIG" game

Mike and I were privileged to get to see The Ohio State University play at the "shoe." Mike made contact with the OSU staff and was able to score 2 seats in the press box. I had no idea exactly what that meant until we were there. OK, this was soooo cool. The seats were on the 40 yard line and overlooking everything. Food and drinks were free (no alcohol)....the press had to work. Plus, after the game were able to go on the field and take pictures. Being that I attended OSU I never went to the pre-game stuff....I was to busy enjoying beverages....man did I miss things...like the team warming up...and the "bee-hive" and the "post-game" song by the team....we were even found by my brother James in a massive crowd of people. So hope you enjoy the pictures!

School Starts

Can't believe the kids are back in school. Ashley started the 9th grade, Maddie started at St Rita in Cincinnati (our school district is even paying for it and picking her up--no more 3 hours in the car for mom, yippee) and Zachary is going to preschool (we decided to give him one more year at home). I am working with him at home on his fine motor/phonics skills.

Ash returned home early so Mike and Zachary were able to celebrate her 14th birthday with her. She had a yummey dinner with them and Auntie Lisa then opened up her gifts! Pictures to come soon....

Maddie and I returned early from MI for the weekend because Madison was the "star" of a local horse show. She rode on her horse "Reese Cup" while I read her story to the crowd. I wasn't ready for that one but I made it through....

July Update

Our black lab, Bailey was diagnosed with cancer. He is 11 years old. We went ahead and had surgery done....now we just have to wait and see if it is going to come back. We are so sad! During his weekend of recovery from surgery Nat painted the “racing” stripes on Zachary’s bedroom walls. Only 2 more rooms to go in the house and we have painted everything.

Nat went to the Apraxic conference in Chicago. She wrote an article http://apraxia-kids.blogspot.com/...and received a scholarship towards the conference fees. Lots of good information was learned and new friends were made. My friend Ginger came for a visit....she flew into Midway and then drove with me all the way back to Ohio. We chatted non-stop for 6 hours...Gotta love Ginger! Her visit was too short....

Our friends the Olech’s came and stay for a weekend. We went to the Air Show and the boys went to the Dragon’s game....it was so great to catch-up on each others lives. We are so happy they will be so close....and can’t wait to visit DC!

Nat and Maddie are gearing up for the Kaufman 3 week visit in August. Thanks for hanging in there while I have been non-existent on our blog. I intend to do better in the near future!

June Update

Ash finished 8th grade at Magsig Middle School, we can’t believe she is going to be in High School....oh, where does the time go??? So we decided to treat her and she got her ears pierced. She was a tough trooper too, not even a flinch...see the video!

Madison also finished her 2 month preschool year. The class put on a wonderful end of the year program. Grandmommy stayed an extra day so she could take part in the presentation. What a fun way to end the school year! She then started school at St Rita School for the Deaf. They have a wonderful summer program. She will be kept very busy learning and making new friends.

Mike and I celebrated our 8th year marriage anniversary; well kinda of...he was TDY for 2 weeks in AL....looking back on our 8 years of marriage has been fun and trying...but I wouldn’t want any other partner to go through life with...We will be taking a weekend away trip to Cedar Point sometime this summer....

At the end of the month we went to the Cincinnati zoo with Madison’s class from school. Zachary brought his bestest buddy, Bradley....it turned out to be the hottest day of the summer thus far...but good times were had by all!

May Update

Zachary finished another year of preschool. He put on a great end of the year video...he was so cute and proud of himself.

Nora aka Grandmommy (Mike’s mom came to visit)....she got to see the AF museum and all around Dayton. She also kept down the fort while Nat and Maddie flew back out to CT to see the oral-motor specialist. Maddie made lots of progress and has been accepted into the Kaufman 3 week intensive summer program. Yeah!

Zach turned 5....He celebrated his birthday this year three separate times. While Grandpa and Mimi were here we had a cake and he opened up gifts. Then Grandmommy came to visit and she made him her special “Grandmommy cake.” Then we had a big celebration with his friends, mommy’s college friends and the Mossing clan. We had a pizza party at the local water park. Plus, he got to blow out the candles on his Pikachu cake (made by mommy, Auntie Christy and Ms Karen)

Madison's first day of preschool

Madison started her first full week (Monday-Thursday)at our public school system. Here she is getting on the bus. What a big girl she is...she looked like she was being swallowed up by the bus. It took everything I had to not cry when I walked off the bus. I know she is in good hands, but my baby is growing up! Sorry the quality of the picture isn't that great but it was soooo early. The poor kid has to get up at 6:15 and out the door by 7:15AM; her normal schedule was up by 7:30ish....so now I have more time in my day to accomplish things! Have a great week! PS--I will be out of pocket for a few weeks...

Spring Break

Visions of the beach danced in our heads....laying lazing by the water and listening to the ocean breezes.....oh, who am I kidding...we went no where. By far this is the longest period of time in the last six years that we have not traveled. So this spring we went no where. I had each day meticulously planned out to include some "fun" and Madison's therapy scheduled. Well that all went down the drain when Mike was diagnosed with bronchitis and shortly thereafter little Maddie came down with something and later was treated for a sinus infection. So our spring break was dampened. Maddie go ZERO therapy for the week. A first in the last 20 months of her life. I did get to take the kids to Bounce U. We picked up two of Zachary's friends and ended over to the never ending jumpy castles and thunderous music. I sat and read the whole time but I felt like I was on sensory overload by the time I left. We also visited Young's Dairy Farm. It was Ashley's first visit. She actual feed a baby calf...she wasn't too happy about it but she did it! Then had ice cream (which Madison didn't eat, right then I knew we had spent an hour to long there)....the kids both got in one good session at the batting cages. The ball's speed was 30MPH and Zach actually got one good hit. Both kids did well! Ash got to spend some time with her friends. She saw a couple of movies. She rated her spring break a 7 out of 10. And she finally got her hair cut.
Next we took a trip down to Cincinnati to see Uncle James. We took him out to lunch, took a quick sight seeing trip of the city, right now the trees are in bloom and it was lovely. Then we drop him off and ended over to the Newport Acquarium (which I believe everyone else in the city decided to do). We stood in line for close to an hour and got to the window and was told it would be another 45 mins before we got in (mind you the wind was blowing and it was cold). So I made the command decision to become annual members...pay the price and we walked right in! Way to go mom, right??? The kids did enjoy petting the sharks and watching the penguins put on a good show. According to Zach, "the penguins were dancing and going fast." Lastly, the kids finished off the bunny house.

Looking For Eggs

Mike took the kids to a local Easter egg hunt. Zachary had a great time, Madison not so much. She found two eggs and was done. But thanks to her big sister she continued on in her search. Zachary shared his treasure too! Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Madison turns THREE

Madison turned three today....it is just unbelievable how fast time goes...Mike and I relived that big day again...trying to only focus on the happy part of it. Madison has been such a joy to have in our lives and family. She truly is our "little angel" (Mike's nickname for her)....she had grown leaps and bounds in her short little life and has overcome tremendous obstacles....we couldn't be more proud of her and can't wait to see what the next year of life reveals to us!

We started the day off with a birthday pancake...then we went to work on her trampoline...and later about 5pm decided it was time for cake, presents and ice cream...we even skipped dinner. Ash and I made her a Barney cake...I know I know Barney is the PURPLE dinosaur and it truly looked purple in person! Ha ha....another one of my cakes lives in infamy! But at least this one tasted good! Thank you to all who sent gifts she had a good time opening her presents and cards.

Time Flies -- last two weeks of March

Ok, Ok...I know life is busy with a husband and two dogs but geez add in three kids and I never seem to have enough time to get this blog updated! So here goes the last two weeks in a nutshell (except Maddie's birthday I will save that for it's own post)....my Aunt Kim finally came out for a visit...she got to lots the kids alot for us because it turned out that the three days she was here we had Madison's IEP meeting and as evaluation at St Ritas. So she took the kids to the park and even got to squeeze a movie in with Zach and Maddie. Thanks Aunt Kim!!! Then we hosted an Apraxia playgroup at the house, finally...we have been here for what 8 months and we are finally have other kids over...Ashley worked extremely hard on a English project...she had to created this massive scrapbook of her short 13 years of life...she did an awesome job and the final product was fantastic...she got an A! My exciting life consists of running kids to and from school and therapies....oh, had a dental appt! Mike is just working and working!

Update on Maddie -- Last week she walked up or set of 7 stairs without help and using the railing...I was besides myself....now we just have to work on the aternating her feet...way to go Madison. She finished the county's preschool on 26 March...she brought a feast of jellies to the school to share with her classmates...(such restrictions on what kids can bring these days) She will be starting on 6 April at her new preschool. She has already gotten to meet her new teacher, Mrs D....she will be wearing pull-ups so keep your fingers crossed that by June she is potty trained. She also passed her eval for St Ritas so now we are waiting to hear if she gets accepted into the program for the summer...we are going to see how our school district works with her to determine if she goes there next year or to St Ritas (if accepted)...our trip to CT was canceled on Monday the 30th...Maddie got really sick on Sunday night, her birthday....and is still quite sick....so we will have to reschedule that and it looks like Mike gets to go on that trip, being that I am having surgery in 10 days or so.....

Ok, just typing this all up is making me tired!

Week of March 9-15

This week was supposed to be my rest week. I ended up coming down with bronchitis and a sinus infection....but alas, no rest for the weary! So on Tuesday we had massive amounts of blood drawn from Madison. Poor girl, when we pulled up to the hospital and I told her and Zach what was happening she kept saying, no no mama! I decided fun should be had by Zach too, so he got the first of 6 shots to get ready for the next school year....although he was a trooper about the whole thing. Then Ash had her physical for the upcoming track season. No shots there but she wanted one...I said really! Teenagers.....

The weather has been wacky this week....a few gorgeous days....had to take Maddie out for an outing at the park to be topped off with riding her bike...included some footage there. She also, said her name this week, and can sing Old MacDonald with assistance....and even got from A to G in the alphabet....she is making tremendous strides.

Ash started track....and is running like crazy...seems to be enjoying it.....Zach started soccer....we can't wait to be spectators at both events!

On March 11, Mike received exciting news that he received his next promotion! We are soooo proud of him and all of his hard work!

Lastly, to top off the week we got new granite counter tops put in. The look great! Now our cabinets look dated...hoping that with new hardware they will be OK, otherwise we are going to have take out that paintbrush again! (pictures to come later)

Week of March 1-8

Ok...trying to keep up daily just isn't working anymore so I am going to give you play by play for the week! This week I observed a preschool classroom in the Centerville school district. The teacher was phenomenal....so I think we will be requesting her room. I also register Zach for kindergarten next year (hoping to get him into the Early 5's but we will see how that goes)...can't believe my baby boy is almost ready for school. Then Mike and I had date night on Friday night....just as I was starting to come down with something....we ate at a yummy steak restaurant...then ran off to pick up shin guards for Zach. A local church in the area does a once a month date night for families with special needs kids; it is first come basis. It is free and the folks there are fantastic. The kids have a great time. Then that night we were asleep and at about 11 pm...I heard Madison make a strange noise. Jumped out of bed and touched her...she was burning up....got medicine down her throat, stripped her of her PJs...and tried to bring the fever down. We weren't sure if a seizure was coming, then we saw her starting to jerk and then administered the diastat (I so hate these febrile seizures).....the seizure didn't last as long as they normally do and Madison definitely fought her way through the whole thing. She was visited by the ambulance folks who brought a stuff bear.....So far we aren't seeing to many side affects to this seizure. So much for the countdown to 8 months.

Awards Banquet

Ok, Nora here is a picture of Mike and I....we attended the base's annual awards banquet. I was so not prepared for the occasion, when I realized that the outfit I thought I would wear (it fit 6 months ago)....didn't fit as I was trying to walk out the door. Oh well...Mike said, "I was still the best lookin' one there!" What a great husband and he still looks good in that uniform.

Zach's last basketball game & Maddie seizure free 7 months

Today was Zach's last basketball game. His Uncle Jamie, Pawpaw and Nana came down from T-town and Cincinnati to watch with us. I didn't have to work so I was able to watch the whole game. It was lots of fun to see how far the team has come.....go Green Dragons...I included a tiny movie...quality isn't that great but you get the gest of the game!

PS -- Madison is 7 months seizure free today! Way to go Madison.
PSS -- had to include the second video....Zach is playing such great defense (allow he is on offense) but you can see he is vertically challenged against the boy in yellow!

St Rita's School for the Deaf

This morning Mike and I toured St Ritas (St. Rita is still Saint of the Impossible) http://www.srsdeaf.org/. It is a school for the deaf but also has an apraxic program (only one in the country that we are aware of). We have heard nothing but great things about the school so we decided to check it out for ourselves. It is a huge old institution...very foreboding....but once inside the classrooms and the climate are awesome. The entire staff speaks and signs....it was interesting to hear the deaf children speak...they reminded me of Madison. To watch the classroom function (based on the Montessori concept) was amazing. We believe that Madison would get a top notch education there but we have to wait and see if she is accepted. Her eval is on 19 March...we will keep you posted.

Valentines Day Celebration

This year we decided to celebrate Valentines day as a family. Ashley made peanut butter/chocolate fondue and ate it with bananas, marshmallows, graham crackers and some strawberries....it was all very yummy. I also made a pretty angel food cake with a strawberry/blueberry heart on it....for the next night....basically we ate our way through the holiday.

Girls Night Out

I got to spend some time tonight with some friends from college. We have been back in the states since Aug and I finally got to get out and enjoy a quiet dinner and movie with great friends....We ate at the Olive Garden and saw He's Just not that into you....a fun "girlie movie"....thanks ladies for a fun night out!

High School

Can you believe that our little girl is 13 and starting HS next year. Well the HS has already spoken with the Ashley and helped her to pick out her course curriculum, crazy...she is getting excited to start HS! The parents even got in on the action...we had a parent meeting and were introduced to the high school and all that it offers. There are over 2000 students (yes bigger than some small colleges)...but they have broken the freshman class up into family pods, where the kids stay for their entire HS career...the kids go back in May and get their lockers, and meet teachers...such an exciting adventure for our Ashley!

Meeting with Neurologist

Today Mike and I meet with Dr DeGrauw for Madison's followup appointment. It was a good meeting and you always learn something new. At this appointment we learned the a child's mylin (fatty tissue that surrounds the brain) grows rapidly about 75% in the first year of life and in the second year of life the remaining 25% finishes...so with that being said, Madison's last MRI showed that her mylin was at about a 16-18th progression so we thought that she would be getting an MRI done next month but as it turns out he wants to wait another YEAR so we will continue to pray that her brain/body heals itself and we will return to Cincinnati Children's for her 4th MRI in Oct 2009. We also found out that her difficult sleeping is due to the apraxia/low tone so we can give her Melatonin on a daily basis...hopefully, her 3-4x a night of waking is reduced to 0 or 1x a night....We will be running a celiac disease panel on her next month. We are wondering if her little body has any intolerances to gulten and caesin. Lastly, we have put Madison on Depakote (epiletic medication)....somehow the last time we left the office we weren't under the impression that Depakote prevents febrile seizures....this visit we were...so after much debate, research and prayer we have decided to put her on Depakote and monitor her liver function....we are hoping by the time she turns 5 she grows out of the febrile seizure disorder....keep your fingers crossed!!!!

Madison's Preschool Evaluation

Maddie and I had her preschool evaluation with the district today. It was a packed 1.5 hours...she said the PT, OT, speech, nurse, and the principal. While navigating a place she had never been and performing for folks she had never meet. She made it through and now we will be meeting to discuss her IEP. All of the teachers and therapist there were great to talk with, we are excited for Madison to start at the school. Some concerns are the fact that it isn't exclusive for kids with apraxia, the length of time she is in school and the fact that the kids don't go in the summer. But I keep reminding myself to take it one day at a time!

Storm hits in the NW area of Ohio

Ugh, another 9" of snow on top of the freezin rain that fell. School was cancelled (which Ash is now cutting into her summer vacation...the school used up 4 of their calamity days during the wind storm this fall), therapies and appointments cancelled, even Mike's work was cancelled. I shoveled at least 3x's, Ashley shoveled twice, and our neighbor used his snow plow for our front sidewalk....so much snow...Mike was putting his car in the garage and putting my van out...well with so much ice on our driveway he ended up running/sliding into the garbage can and broke my rear light -- But on the bright side the dogs love playing in it...the kids don't; I have to coax the kids into their snow suits to play outside...it was much easier to get the kids ready for the beach...

Kindergarten Meeting

Well tonight I attended a kindergarten meeting for parents in the area. There were two private schools and our local district school. The teachers discussed what they looked for during the evaluation....the types of skills needed to include gross motor, fine motor, pre-reading/writing skills and social emotional skills. So much to think about when it comes to putting your little one into the educational system. Zach will have his eval in May so I will keep you all updated. I can't believe that my baby boy is getting to be school age!

Bunny Hill

Well today we had a bit of snow about 1" so we decided to venture out and find a hill for the kids to sled on. Unfortunately, for Ash it was a "bunny" hill but it worked for the little guys. Madison seemed to have the most success on the hill (problably due to her low tone) and Zachary seemed to constantly get stuck on his way down. The kids also made some great snowangels....and to give Ash a bit of a thrill we pulled her around the parking lot (I sat in the back of the van and held onto the sled...then of course Mike and I had to take turns)....good times had by all!

Madison is SIX months seizure free

Yeah, it has been six months since Madison's last seizure. This past month has been difficult in the fact that she has had at least three seperate colds, ugh...around the clock meds...but each day is a triumph.

Zachary's first basketball game

This winter season we decided it was time for Zachary try his hand at basketball; so we signed him up for the 4 and 5 year old league at the local YMCA. His team is called the Green Giants. Watching his first game was a blast...they actually did better than I envisioned their first game after only two practices. Zachary loves to throw in the ball and dribble. In the last couple of games he has actually taken shots on the hoop instead of passing the ball off...Go Zach!

Sledding in T-town

Well the forecast called for warm weather in two days so we decided to take advantage of what snow was left....granted it had rained on and off for 2 days so the snow was more like ice...but whose to say when we would get the chance again. So we bundled everyone up....lots of layers, found some sleds to include box tops and garbage bags and went off in search of the perfect hill.

Madison didn't want to go down the hill on her first attempt but she was hooked by the time we got to the bottom even though we fell off....it was a good thing I had a strong hold on her. Zach and Mike tried out Z new sled and hit a ice bump, POP went the sled but it held out.

Kids didn't want to leave at the end of the day; we are hoping to get more snow!

Christmas in Toledo

Merry Christmas to all. The kids and I left for Toledo on Tuesday and Mike came up on Christmas Eve with the dogs. We started the day off with decorating the cake for baby Jesus, then off to mass for families. Lots of kids so our kids' noises blended in well. We spent Christmas Eve with Nat's extended family; we are up to 48 Great Great Grandchildren. A bit overwhelming for 1st timers but they handled it all well. Grandma looked well and Santa even came for a visit...

The grandparents did a great job decorating and Santa even found his way with everyone's gifts. Z is all into Bakugan games, M loved her Barney doll and A got a Wii...finally, we are with the times!

Christmas Decorating

I can't believe it is December already. Tonight we finally brought all the boxes up and spread the Christmas cheer. The kids really got a kick out of "their" ornaments this year. I have bought each child a different ornament every year that has some meaning for an event in the past year, so that was fun. Ash and Zach put up the two manger scenes....Zachary kept asking when he could open up the gifts that are already under the tree...

Mike and I are now debating if we will put up lights outside....the weather is just a tad bit colder than Guam.....we miss our neighbors across the street who light up the street.....not sure if I have that in me or not.....

Madison's First Day of Preschool

Madison started preschool today.....what a big day she had....she was so excited to carry her Dora lunchbox to the car. We first took brother to his preschool...then drove across town to her school...she walked right in....found a wagon and was the first to arrive to her classroom. She made herself right at home. There are 5 other children in the class. The sing, play games, have snack and run around in the gym. We are so glad that they opened up space for her....

Another 29th Birthday for Natalee

Yes, Yes, I celebrated another 29th birthday.....We had cake the night before....yummy ice cream cake....we kept the day low key...you know driving 10/11 hours does that for you.....I don't believe we even took pictures of the event....oh, well there is always next year at my next 29th birthday party.

I did get to drive to Montgomery to see my good friend, Krista so that was great fun. She treated me to dinner at Longhorn and lots of conversation....miss u lots girl!

Another Big Game

The day is finally here for Mike's team to set the record straight....we went out the night before to buy game shirts for all of the kids.....Mike's whole family got together, rented a HD tv to watch the game....heard it was a good time had by all....and yes ALABAMA "the elephants" finally won against Auburn.....I was in Montogomery holding baby Caleb and consoling Kristen (Auburn fan).....ROLL TIDE

Thanksgiving in Alabama

Happy Turkey Day to everyone.....we are thankful that we are back in the US and able to drive to see family....although what a drive we had ahead of us.....we spent the day at Grandmommy's house eating a wonderful feast in her newly renovated kitchen....we had turkey, ham, mac n' cheese (southern dish), stuffing, green beans, and choc pie, plus, homemade apple pie.....and can't forget that sweet tea...

After the lunch we packed everyone up and head to the park to walk it off....Nora, Ash and I walked about 4 miles while Mike and Uncle Mitchell played at the park with the kids....

A wonderful day had by all!

Nancy Kaufman Center Visit

Today, Madison and I had her evaluation at the Nancy Kaufman Center in Michigan. Nana and Uncle James came with us....what a great help they were....the evaluation was informative but disappointing at the same time. Nancy doesn't believe that Madison is ready for the Kaufman method yet....she believes that her oral-motor and sensory integration issues are bigger issues to address at this time. So we are trying to go to Conn. to see a oral-motor specialist......she also stated that Madison needed to get her OU, O, E, and T down pat before any clear speech could be understood.

Good news on the preschool homefront...with a few phone calls Madison is now in the EI preschool four times a week...so that will hopefully start next week....yeah, more peer interaction and daily therapists.....

Madison and I watched the BIG game with family and friends....I broke down the night before and had to buy her a OSU cheerleading outfit....she was a cute cheerleader....with all of the folks in the house she was the hit of the night...kept giving high 5's.....what a great game to end the season with......GO BUCKS

First Snowfall

We woke up to our first snowfall.....everyone was excited including the dogs! Kids couldn't wait to get outside and play in the 1" of snow!!!! Coming out of the gym and putting Maddie in her car seat, I turn around to look for Zachary and for a brief moment I thought I lost him. But it turns out he was "licking" the bumper....I say "yuck" Zach that is dirty....he said Mommy it is white it's not dirty....so I tell him to stick out his tongue and try to catch the flakes instead....oh, to see the world through the eye of a 4 year old....Happy winter to all.

We just recieved word that Madison DOES NOT have Alpers disease.....thank you to all of you who prayed for her......we are now back to not knowing why she is still delayed...So this is what we do know she has global delays, apraxia and delayed mylin but maybe all those issues will clear up in time with the appropriate help!

Madison Update

Hi everyone -- good news....so far these are the test results that have come back.....

blood sugars -- good
liver -- good
febrile seizure plus -- NEGATIVE -- which is good
sleep deprived EEG -- good...lots of twitching activity but NORMAL....apparently due to Madison low tone...and the fact that she works so hard daily her muscles will twitch more than normal
MRI -- good....and CONFIRMED that she does have delayed mylination....so 3rd opinion is a charm....waiting on the other mitchocondria blood work to return....to include the ALPERs test....
We are both hoping that that too will come back normal/negative....we truly believe the seizures just threw her little body into a tizzy...and with the proper early intervention...to include more speech...she will develop on that "normal" route...
We also just got a phone call (2 days ago) that she does qualify for the Kauffman method...so I am driving to MI next week for that evaluation...a bit of money out of our pocket...but if it helps Madison to speak then it is all worth it!

Halloween Fun

The night was warm for the end of October -- layers all around. I lit the pumpkins, got the candy out and dressed up the munchkins. Zachary was our spiderman (for the 2nd year in a row), Madison was the cutest lady bug around and Ash was a football player (got ready at a friend's house, didn't get pictures). We promptly left the house at 6pm and went to about 20 houses before the cold set in. By the time Daddy got home the kids were freezin' and ready to eat their candy. So Mike took Madison to four more houses and we called it a night!
